We all know this one: “Mom, I’m the only one taking care of you. You should put my name on the deed now.”
Or this one: “You better give me gifts now, or I’m not coming to visit you anymore.”
This is called manipulation. It can lead to undue influence. It happens all too often. Giving in and making “gifts” to the loved one who feels they “deserve it now” can take a huge toll – not just on your family, but on you.
Fact: You are an autonomous human being and no one tell you what you “should” do with your assets, or “why” you should favor someone over another. It’s your well-being – not theirs. It’s your money – not theirs.
Edwards Estate & Elder Law can educate you about your rights. If you feel you are being manipulated or taken advantage of, we will fiercely advocate for your rights in your best interests, not the manipulator’s.
